Aurora observation equipment is installed at SSC and KEOPS

The installation is located at KEOPS (Kiruna Esrange Optical Platform Site) at SSC (Esrange Space center) in Kiruna, Sweden. SSC is a very secure site and is divided into four access zones. Our access was the lowest class, so we were limited to the areas we could freely go to. To get to the top of the hill where the observation site was located, we had to pass through the grounds of the parabolic antenna that required an upper-access permit. We had to ask a person from SSC to take us to and from the observation site, as we could not enter there without an escort. The observation equipment was carried to the observation site by heavy machinery. The equipment was quite large, so we had it moved in two separate trips. There was nothing around the hill, just an observation hut and a small antenna for balloons on top of the hill.

The observation hut is simple, but it is equipped with an optical fiber Internet connection and heating facilities. With the help of Spectrometer Inc. we set up the observation equipment inside the hut. The observation equipment was larger than the size of the entrance, so we had to assemble the parts inside the small hut. The roof is a domed skylight. First, the spectrometer was placed on a vibration-isolation table and adjusted. May is the time of the midnight sun, so we could not see the Northern Lights, but it was warm enough to work. In winter it is too dark to work and it gets as low as minus 30 degrees Celsius. A camera for a 2-D spectrograph and a camera lens with a liquid crystal wavelength filter were pointed at the zenith directly below the skylight, waiting for the aurora to appear. The aurora season begins in September.
